Zuzana Ullmannová (b. 1996, Prague) creates delicate paintings inspired by the fallibility of memory, dreams, and the human body’s connection to nature. Teetering between figuration and abstraction, her works are driven by their materiality.

Working on unprimed fabric and canvas, Ullmannová pours, rubs and soaks thin paint into the soft surface. While it’s still wet, she quickly directs the paint to pool and run down into unexpected places. The paintings become softer and more muted; when dry, they are seen as if through a haze.

Ullmannová graduated with a 1st class BA(Hons) Painting from ECA 2019. She continues to live and works in Edinburgh.
