Alice Sherlock is teasing us with her latest paintings, featuring tempting scenes from warmer climes. Inspired by a trip to Rhodes last summer, Alice says that producing these paintings during the colder months “became a welcome escape, allowing me to return to the warmth and light of that time“.
Alice visited numerous areas on the island – Anthony Quinn Bay, Kallithea Springs and the Tsampika Monastery. While she was travelling around, she sketched the landscape and local architecture, filling her sketchbook with drawings made on location.
Translating these drawings into paintings, Alice has chosen to work with gouache, building up watery, layered marks on paper. Gouache being an opaque, fast-drying, water-soluble paint is rich with pigment and has a matte finish. It’s highly versatile and allows for smooth washes, bold colour and easy layering of light over dark. It has allowed Alice to perfectly capture the essence of summertime in Rhodes.
By subtly shifting and playing with perspective, the landscapes and buildings have become slightly warped and uncanny. Familiar places are seen through the lens of memory.
