Tony Black is a natural storyteller in both words and art. His ambition to paint was shelved after achieving unexpected success as a bestselling novelist; “Tony Black is my favourite British crime writer and Gus Drury <Black’s anti-hero punk rocker detective> is the genre’s most interesting protagonist” – Irvine Welsh.

Black now paints every day, following a spontaneous style that is at odds with his rigid pre-planning of novel writing. Routinely relying heavily on tapping into the unconscious, allowing the brush to lead the way. Many of his works feature repeating images, like characters that reappear in novels; building a narrative of their own one chapter at a time.
