Paul McParland is a Glasgow born artist whose mixed media portraits peel back the mask of pleasantness and congeniality and take a peek inside the depths of the human psyche.

Indicating the decay of memory and presence, this body of work is drawn from antique photographs and family albums found at local markets. McParland has recreated these portraits using embossed line and delicately applied charcoal before layers of silicone are added in a painterly fashion. The images are then worked and reworked as the layers of time are pulled away, exposing a faded and disintegrating visage of someone who once existed but has since been forgotten, bringing us face to face with the question of our own mortality.

Paul is a recent graduate in Fine Art from DJCAD and is now based in rural Angus.
