Lily Macrae first caught our eye during her sell out degree show at ECA in 2016. There was an ambiguity to her paintings; figures and forms being pulled between atmospheric layers of colour, transparency and abstraction. Teamed with an eye-popping colour palette, she had our attention and she featured as a stand out graduate in our annual Best of Scottish Art Schools Show.
After a stint off travelling the world, seeking new learnings and inspiration, she has returned with her (and our) first solo show of 2018. This fresh new body of work consists of large scale oil paintings that continue to explore the elision of figure and abstract. Using elements from the human architecture and brushwork of Old Masters, each painting gives the suggestion of many layered figures and forms. The fluidity and physicality of one echoes the other, resulting in work that sits in a state of flux.
Show opens Saturday 10th February at 2pm. We hope to see you in the gallery!
