Jaco Putker: Creeps & Cryptids.

Jaco Putker, The Batman, Photopolymer Etching, 28x38cm, £335

Printmaker Jaco Putker’s series Creeps & Cryptids was born from his life-long fascination with monsters, mythical beings and other fantastical creatures. Set within natural environments, his creeps and cryptids encounter (or are about to) strangers, mostly young children, creating a narrative that is both ominous and disarming.

Batman, Frankenstein, a Vampire, a Yeti, an Ape, Mickey Mouse and many more well known figures have been transformed into block, blacked out versions of themselves. Each character retains their distinctive features and silhouettes. This bold play with form and singular use of colour adds to their presence and personalities – making the viewer more curious as to their motive and behaviour.

“Whether from folklore, literature, or popular culture, there be monsters throughout history. They serve as metaphors for the challenges and uncertainties that life presents. They can also be seen as representations of the darkness within ourselves. The beings in this series don’t look very threatening though. With their blocky appearance and highly stylised features, they look awkward and somewhat goofy. Cartoonesque. But their presence is undeniable. In the midst of their natural habitat, they stick out like a sore thumb”.

Combining digital and traditional printing techniques, Jaco has enjoyed playing with the contrast between the intense, deep black of the characters and the soft, finer detailed backdrops. The bulk and dominating stance of the characters opposes the organic surroundings.
