We’re delighted to have opened our first solo show in the gallery with Contemporary Wilderness Painter Sam Gare. Currently based in London, Sam calls Scotland her second home. Driven by her life long passion for nature (Sam is an ambassador for the Wilderness Foundation UK) she frequently travels to extreme and immense natural environments around the globe to inform her work. So it felt all the more special to work together, selecting 8 areas across the Scottish Highlands to feature in this collection.
‘By Land, By Foot’ is a new body of work consisting of 8 original paintings, depicting the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, explored overland and by foot.
The work helps us to discover our relationship to landscape, and the desire to go deep and high into Scotland’s rugged landscape using our feet. From short jaunts to overnighters under starry skies, first timers to old hats, warm fires and laughter in Bothy’s with friends and strangers. Sandwiches and camping food, to shared experiences and story swapping. Being eaten alive by midges and coping with wet boots, to glorious sunshine and being above the clouds. Incredible views and tired legs, Heathers and Cows, carrying tents and checking the map 100 times. And finally to awe, peace and tired fulfilment.
These paintings are not only for those who live in Scotland, coming away with memories deeply embedded in their souls, but for all those ‘dreamers’ and ‘maybe next year’ or the ‘I’m not fit enough’ ers… Scotland is calling us all” – Sam Gare.
Featuring the Isle of Skye and Ben Macdui, Buachaille Etive Mòr and Suilven to name a few. Sam works with a multitude of media; pens, acrylic paint, pastels, markers, gold leaf. She gently marks up her base layer with acrylic markers and pens, working intuitively, relying on photos and memories of a location. She works into the sky with pastels, capturing the light and building space around the lands. Sam is focused on expressing the movement, feel and freedom found in these wild and vast environments.
Before arriving into the gallery, Sam took the paintings on a road trip out into the wilds, visiting their respective locations.
