We’ve brand new paintings in the gallery from Leeds based artist Dan Cimmermann. A collection of portraits titled The Pachinko Series. The work explores the tension between simplicity and chaos. Inspired by time Dan spent living in Tokyo, the series draws from the surreal atmosphere of Pachinko parlours. Spaces filled with flashing lights, metallic sounds, and a constant, hypnotic rhythm.
“The Pachinko Series is about a wall of noise. When I lived in Tokyo, Japan I used to be fascinated by the deafening sound emerging from smoky Pachinko parlours. The techno music, the metallic noise of ball bearings blasting around futuristic fruit machines, the wall of cigarette smoke and the view of the backs of salarymen banging relentlessly at buttons. It felt like an alien world, surreal and incomprehensible.
When I finally found the courage to step inside the feeling was even more exaggerated. The world of politics and media feels a little bit like this to me now. The simple covered in layer upon layer of noisy rhetoric, opinion, accusation and fake news. What is real anymore? The simple female figure in profile represents a sense of simple, innocence”.
