Breakouts 2024 – A Closer Look.

IMG_2536

Huge thanks to all who came along to the opening night of our Breakouts Show, giving support to this year’s 8 selected artists. It’s always a great time to engage with the artists face to face, explore their themes and learn about the art that has come from years of hard work, growth, talent and that continual desire to push themselves forward into new territories of thought.

So who are this year’s 8….

Felix Bode | GSA

Felix Bode is working to reconcile two contradictory notions: the ephemeral and fluid nature of time and intensity of individual thought and feeling. His paintings depict vast scenes that are detached from the feeling he attributes to them, emphasizing the fleeting nature of images in the contemporary world. It is through the process of painting that he connects scenery and inner emotion. Discover his work here.

Ciumeghui | Oil on Plywood | 200 x 150 cm | £2750 | SOLD

Elise Shields | ECA

Elise Shields artistic practice centers around her experience with the neurological variation named Aphantasia and the impact it has had on her memory. Aphantasia, defined as the absence of mental images in the ‘mind’s eye’, causes difficulty with the recollection of situations, spaces or faces. The mechanics of visual imagery in this context has become the driving force behind Elise’s work, which investigates ways to represent the disjointed nature of how her mind renders faces. Victor Flavell | GSA

Tom Houlihan | DJCAD

Tom Houlihan is a visual artist from Glasgow. His painting and mark-making practice explores the complex landscapes of human connection and relationships. “I am interested in the intricacies of the everyday. The immeasurable weight of normality and the vast networks of human lives. A spiders-web of decisions made, paths crossed, stories experiences, and heart strings, all tangled into one“. Discover his work here.

The Place Where He Inserted The Blade | Charcoal & Pastel on Paper (framed) | 40 x 48 | £450 | BUY

Louise McGunnigle | GSA

Glasgow based Louise McGunnigle’s work forms a conversation around the parallels of abstraction and figuration, where the figures emerge from the canvas through intuitive mark making, but not necessarily at first glance. Although the figure is a primary, she also aims to create a spiritual dynamic between these apparitions across different canvas. Discover her work here.

Agnes Roberts | ECA

Agnes Roberts’ work is an exploration of memory and nostalgia. Her paintings aim to teleport you back in time – that melancholy feeling of reliving an aspect of a time in your life you can never recreate. Though many moments are individual to her, she intends the viewer to project their own life upon them. Portraiture is a primary focus in many of her pieces using elements of landscape, symbolism and pattern to, hopefully, better portray the individuals depicted – more than just their appearance but a visual and psychological portrayal. Henry Wolff | ECA

Henry Wolff’s practice investigates land husbandry: the care, cultivation and breeding of crops and animals – management and conservation of recourses. Through exploratory methods, it engages with specific environments that example agricultural, war and waste interventions. To uncover their relational ecologies, their depiction is intersected with visual devices. The aim of this is to create a visual anthology that reconciles with the husbandries of specific sites and to add to a dialogue of human ecology. Discover his work here.
