Ocean Anton is a London-born artist, living and working in Scotland. Her works explore colour, pattern and line, as well as (more recently) interpreting recurring personal, social, and cultural eelings/attitudes.
As a mixed individual, Black English and White Scottish, she favours being aware of injustices around the world and close to home. Ocean’s current interests are based on the time she was called “Alligator Bait” by one of her peers during her early high school years. This was a term she had no clue about until asking her mother and researching online. She came to understand the words’ origin, as being one of the many phrases used to demean and dehumanise Black people. Often directed at Black babies and children with an unsurprising history of novelty memorabilia such as postcards, figurines and advertising/packaging.
These works are a realisation of years of contemplating the episode.
Ocean graduated with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art Practice from Duncan of Joradanstone School of Art & Design ’26. We are delighted to be featuring Ocean in our BREAKOUTS exhibition.
