Lily McRae has just competed her studies, BA(Hons) Painting, at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating this year 2016.
Lily’s work negotiates the boundary between figuration and abstraction, creating ambiguity through the suggestion of many layered forms, allowing the process of painting to strip away the original source imagery, so that it becomes unrecognisable.
Including, excluding and obliterating the image, Lily’s practice is an exploration into the handling and manipulation of paint. Exploring the physicality of materials; revealing, uncovering and recovering. She intends the traces of form and gesture which are left behind to be subtle, suggesting the memory of instinctual movement and mark making. The duality between the landscape and the figure interests her, the fluidity and physicality of one echoes the other.
