Contemporary painter Gabriel Phipps joins the gallery this July, with his work featuring in our annual Best Of Scottish Art Schools Show 2020.

Current Artist Statement

“My work has investigated the theme of leisure and how people sometimes reveal a sense of disconnection or discontent when they are meant to be free from everyday pressures. The act of painting and layering an image with colour still gives me unbeatable excitement and a feeling that there will always be more to explore. Lately I have also been painting with plasticine. These paintings explore the tension between escapism and feelings of alienation – they have perhaps taken on more poignancy in view of the loneliness and isolation of our current crisis”.

Phipps graduated from GSA with a 1st class BA(Hons) Degree in Painting & Printmaking, 2020. He is currently taking some time over in France to focus on his painting.
