Emma Hayes is an Irish artist living and working in Dublin. Her work focuses on her own personal attachments and anxieties she experiences within domestic spaces, particularly environments found at home. Reflecting on past and present relationships with people, she explores their association to certain objects and settings; a book, a chair, a couch, lamps, a bedroom, the lounge.
“My work begins from a particular affection I feel towards a room. Thinking about my bedroom for example I ask myself questions. What does my bedroom do? How does it make me feel? What memories do I have of being in this space? I like to ask myself the question what it is like to be in these rooms”.
Hayes’ use of gestural marks and confident brushstrokes overlay often more minimally applied areas of paint. She overlaps forms and tones and plays with translucent qualities, evoking an element of absence within the presence of her scenes.
Hayes graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from NCAD, Dublin 2019.
