In this URL series Frew aims to reflect Post-Internet discourse, by depicting shortened URLs which denote portraits (when typed into Google the URLs link to either painted or photographed portraits), which focus on contextual awareness of image and how verisimilitude itself can be perceived, by critiquing the very nature of the painting itself amidst an Expanded Field condition. This series somewhat shares the sensibilities of the artist On Kawara’s Date Paintings, by functioning as a strategy and implementing language as a form of aesthetic. The process Frew has used to realise these paintings extends beyond traditional verticality of the easel and paintbrush archetype, instead exploring a wide avenue of formal possibilities by using (and not limited to) spray paint, paint rollers and painting horizontally.
