“The painting ‘The Old Ark Tethered To The Weathered Tree’ was inspired by the West Parish Church which stood in Castlemilk since the 1950’s until last year. I didn’t realise when I first saw the building and started drawing it that it had so little time left standing before being demolished. In front of the church stood a tree that looked as if it had as much personality and experience as the church. It seemed as if they were both tethering each other in place to endure the passage of time and retain their dignity and beauty. I had thought about including a person in the scene and then realised that the two characters already present and the relationship between them was story enough. However, when I was painting the light reflected in one of the windows of the church and I could see the suggestion of a human figure which I had included without intention and decided to leave him there as it seemed he had a sense of sadness and regret to be witnessing the two old abandoned friends holding each other up” – Coll Hamilton.
