Na h’Oighrean (The Heirs)

Oil on canvas.

“I began exploring my relationship to the Isle of Skye, an island off the coast of Scotland where half of my lineage can be traced to. Using discarded family photographs, I began piecing together fragmented histories to better understand the nuanced tensions surrounding inheritance, land commodification, and gender dynamics.

This image that I chose to paint shows a group of young men on the island they call home. At a time when it was still a small island hidden away off the west coast. That hadn’t yet been carved up by such a sudden influx of modern tourism.

Leading to a sky high rise in the price of land on the island. This lead to a sharp cut off between two brothers; both depicted here, over the land and the decrepit shed they stand in front.

Researching the island’s legacy of resilience, I traced a timeline to the present day, where this overwhelming surge in tourism continues to reshape the land. Amidst this, a dispute over a seemingly insignificant plot has fractured the relationship between two brothers, revealing deeper issues tied to ownership, masculinity, and cultural value”.
