Paint – in its purest form. By reducing oil paint to its basic constituent, suspended to see from all angles, Frew has aimed to analyse the notion of colour, the traditional discourse of painting and how paint can operate as a sculptural entity. The clear resin also could be said to imitate a screen, thus further informing the digital narratives found in Frew’s work. To embed the paint, he laboriously spent weeks moulding and polishing the resin: this was an experimental and unique way of presenting paint, which brought together the traditional medium of oil painting and newer processes such as resin casting; as such, process became an important factor in this work.
