Inferno is a raw, spontaneous reaction to the drama and torment evident in Eugene Delacroix’s ‘The Barque of Dante’ or ‘Dante and Virgil in Hell’. Based on Canto 8 of Inferno in the Divine comedy by the poet Dante Alighieri.
The poet crosses the River Styx, the dark waters filled with tormented souls who cling to the side of his boat, as he travels through hell, inferno, purgatory and finally paradise on his search for salvation.
Oil on canvas.
