The Lost Valley is a steep-sided glen, hidden in between two of the “Three Sisters of Glencoe” in the Scottish Highlands. Surrounded by myth and legend and featuring in the tale of the Glencoe Massacre, it is also an area of great geological interest. The mountains of Glen Coe are the remnants of an ancient caldera; the remaining sides of a massive volcano which erupted around 420 million years ago. Since then, rock has been eroded and moved by natural forces – it is this sense of deep time and gradual transformation which inspired this painting.
