My paintings are of landscapes with human habitation or signs of it, however the occurrence of the human figure is often subordinate to the immensity of the geographical world in which it is depicted. My landscapes are frequently sparse and the scale of human presence small in comparison to these vast open spaces, observing how fleeting a human lifetime is in relation to the timeframe of these vast, apparently permanent topographic scenes. I am interested in why landscapes solicit the emotional responses that they do, of the subjectivity in reacting to landscapes, particularly in these half worlds of controlled isolation and geographical indifference.
