In these works I have focussed on the activity of skiing, particularly the ever changing levels of visibility and apparent emptiness that contrast with portals of crystal clarity and high-speed activity. Here high points of sociability occur in a context of intense isolation and loneliness whilst all around is the rhythmic ascent and decent in a surreal hushed acoustic. In the paintings I am trying to retain the vast emptiness of these places, the insignificance of the scale of the human figure and the strange surreal atmosphere of this activity.
I am very much interested in the language of mark making of what can be read within a fluid, apparently effortless brush stroke. I have kept my palette very simple in order to attempt to depict the rather ethereal qualities such as the vibrations within light or the presence of moisture within air.
