By kayak and on foot, I discover Scotland by my own means, traveling into the wild places. The process of the journey intensifies my emotional connection with my surroundings. From the water and mountain peak I am reminded of my vulnerability and isolation in the face of an infinite natural landscape.
My paintings are more than a representation of the landscape; they act as a mirror for my own emotional and mental processes. The bow of a kayak or the solitary boat offers the viewer an opportunity to share the journey, transporting them to the wilderness. Imaginary elements, such as a cross or exaggerated skyline, are used to suggest a divine presence and portray a sublime landscape. My paintings are of course a Romantic vision, a longing to become the small figure once again.
